R.I.P. Little Buddy

This dog, Shakie, has been in one house or another of mine (or my family's) since 1992. His story is long, sweet, and sometimes very sad. But all in all he lead a good life. My mom had to put him down last week. And thanks to her, his life post 1994 was stable and happy.

I don't believe in heaven. So I sure don't believe all dogs go to heaven. But I wish like hell they did. Cripes. If only some dogs got to go to heaven, or a a select few went, Shakie would be pushed to front of the line to have his back scratched by St. Pete and let inside. Shakie was that sweet of a dog.

I'll write more when I'm emotionally equipped to do so. But much thanks to my mom for giving this dog a real home and a good life.

Sorry to hear about Shakespeare. Has the word spread to his original owners? I'm glad he turned out to be such a sweet dog and your mom came through and gave him the home he needed. I have such unfortunate memories of him (eating stuff, peeing on stuff, etc.) but i trust your word that he became a very good dog. Sorry. Byron

His original owners? That's funny. I e-mailed original owner #1 (Yankee Scholar). He's done right with that dog by me. Original owner #2 (Mr. West Coast) called me two months post-college and asked if my mom would look after the dog while he was at Wolf Ridge for a year. Then he would take Shakie back when his tenure at Wolf Ridge ended.

That was the summer of 1994. Still haven't heard back from him. So I'm not all that interested in tracking him down.

But to a happier point, that dog flourished once he had one steady owner, instead of four to seven college-aged owners, most of who resented having a dog at all, much less one in a house with no fenced in yard. He became a great dog. Texas does have the effect in bringing the best out in us.

That is a cute picture of you and Shakey (I always spelled it like Shakey's the pizza place).
